Angiomas and hemangiomas are abnormal blood vessel growth that commonly manifest as red or purple birthmarks.
What is it?
Angiomas, small elevated growths, can emerge anywhere on your body. While typically harmless and not demanding treatment, an angioma might need removal if it leads to discomfort or is situated in a position where it faces frequent injury. The removal would be performed at our dermatology center.
Hemangiomas frequently occur in infants and children, and can manifest either on the skin or within internal organs like the liver or brain. Those appearing on the skin often possess a red, raised appearance, leading to the nickname of strawberry hemangiomas. Hemangiomas presenting on internal organs might not be detectable outwardly, necessitating further examinations within our skin care clinic in curating a comprehensive diagnosis.
How is it treated?
Hemangiomas, whether manifesting on the skin or internal organs, are typically addressed through diverse treatment tailored to their location, dimensions, and potential complications. Management options for superficial skin hemangiomas may include observation, topical treatments, laser therapy or surgical excision in cases where discomfort or aesthetic considerations arise. If not irritating, they can be left alone. Internal hemangiomas, such as those affecting the liver or brain, may require other strategies. In instances where complications like bleeding or organ dysfunction arise, medical interventions like medication or embolization may be recommended.
