A common skin condition that causes a scaly rash primarily on the oily areas of the body like the face, scalp, chest and back.
What is it?
Seborrheic dermatitis is characterized by red, rough, itchy and flaky skin, predominantly on the scalp. However, it can also impact other sebum-rich areas of the body, such as the face, chest and back. It's thought to be linked to a yeast called Malassezia that resides on the skin or an inflammatory reaction related to the oil-rich skin. The signs and symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis tend to flare with stress, fatigue or seasonal changes. In infants, this condition is also known as “cradle cap.”
The symptoms often vary in intensity and may even vanish and later reappear. Seborrheic dermatitis usually isn't harmful, but it can cause discomfort and may lead to self-awareness or embarrassment.
How is it treated?
While there isn’t a cure for seborrheic dermatitis, our team here at Dermatology & Skin Surgery Center can effectively diagnose and treat your condition with medicated shampoos to help alleviate symptoms. We can also apply a prescription-strength corticosteroid cream, foam, ointment or oil on the scalp or affected areas.
With seborrheic dermatitis, it’s recommended that treatment is received as soon as possible to avoid thickening of the scale or potential infection.
