Combines light and a light-activated drug to treat conditions like acne, psoriasis and skin cancer.
What is it?
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) combines light energy with a photosensitizer drug designed to destroy precancerous and cancerous cells using light activation. Using PDT to effectively treat various skin conditions, starts with a two-step process. First, it starts with the application of a light-sensitive drug, known as a photosensitizing agent, which is initially inactive. A specific wavelength of light then activates the drug, allowing for targeted treatment that protects healthy skin.
When performed by a board-certified dermatologist, PDT is minimally invasive and reduces the risk of scarring. Our team at DSSC will recommend the most appropriate treatment for your needs. For some patients, PDT offers minimal downtown and a quick return to daily routines.
PDT can treat acne, actinic keratosis, psoriasis, skin cancer, vitiligo, and other common skin disorders. It's also shown to effectively treat bacterial, fungal and viral infections, as well as acne and spots or patches on the skin. Studies have shown that this light-based therapy also triggers the body’s immune system response, enhancing your body’s ability to destroy cancerous and precancerous cells.
