Damaged and visible blood vessels just beneath the skin’s surface that are red, blue or purple and have a “web-like” appearance.
What is it?
Spider veins often manifest in clusters that mimic the patterns of webs or branches. They can materialize anywhere on the body but are commonly found on the legs, feet or face. These webby veins occur when the valves within your veins become weak. Factors such as sunlight, hormonal fluctuations, prior vein surgery, excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays or an injury can also contribute to their development.
Spider veins are more prevalent in women than men and have a genetic component. Those who sit or stand for extended periods, pregnant women and individuals battling obesity are also prone to spider veins due to impaired circulation.
Although these veins are harmless, they can lead to swelling and a sensation of heaviness in the affected areas. Occasionally, spider veins may indicate a more critical issue, chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), when leg veins don’t allow blood to flow back up to the heart.
How is it treated?
While spider veins are generally benign, their appearance is mostly unwanted. Dermatology & Skin Surgery Centers can reduce the appearance of spider veins through laser therapy, injection procedures and sclerotherapy, all of which are minimally invasive options. If your spider veins signal a more serious underlying condition, our experienced providers will prioritize treating it before assisting you in achieving your aesthetic objectives.
