Psoriasis is a chronic, noncontagious auto-immune skin disease characterized by patches of abnormal red, pink or purple skin and dry, itchy skin.
What is it?
Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that affects the skin. It causes rapid cell multiplication beyond the average rate and results in skin inflammation. Psoriasis is not infectious and cannot be transmitted between individuals. Sufferers typically exhibit red, inflamed patches of skin covered in thick, silvery-white scales. These patches are often itchy and can cause burning sensations and discomfort. The skin around these patches usually feels dry, and it's not uncommon for the skin to crack and bleed. Stiff, inflamed joints are also a common symptom.
Even more, symptoms can differ and fluctuate during psoriasis outbreak cycles, which can last from several days to several weeks. Psoriasis is frequently a chronic condition.
How is it treated?
Despite the lack of a known cure, our board-certified dermatologists and certified skincare specialists can assist in managing your psoriasis through the use of topically applied treatments such as corticosteroids and oral retinoids to help keep symptoms in check and —even more importantly—at bay.
Here at Dermatology & Skin Surgery Centers, we suggest treatments such as salicylic acid, coal tar, retinoids and even a simple remedy like aloe vera. In certain instances, we may propose and carry out light/phototherapy to alleviate symptoms. We can also prescribe oral or injectable medications for more advanced cases that help cool and calm the immune system.
